I remember when I first started wearing makeup. I’d walk into local drugstores with my friends, we’d browse around to play Russian roulette with our makeup. This was the act of purchasing makeup by guessing what colours would suit best. Swatching? Absolutely impossible. No honey, your best hope was that your newly purchased foundation and powder suited your skin. Most of the time, it was always a shade off, unless you got super lucky. My mom constantly remarked that my skin looked a shade of blue. I didn’t believe her. Oh, so much grey tone. Oh, naïve, foolish child of 2001. If only I could go back and smack some sense into her.
Luckily, the young women in 2016 have YouTube to help them avoid the awkward blue eyeshadow and glitter gloss stages of life. The technology behind makeup and hair has also come much further than it had in 15 years ago. Still, some things never change. The yearning for a new lip colour, choosing between gloss versus lipstick, and the time old game of Russian roulette with drugstore brand makeup. Come on CVS, PUT OUT A SAMPLE ALREADY. But I’ll admit, even drugstore makeup has come a long way.
On that note, I know some of you are saying “Tish, get to the point, what’s with the primer?” OKAY OKAY. So here’s the deal:
“To prime or not to prime? That is the question.” 🤔
Na, you prime, girlfriends. Prime it up! So here’s the 411 on this absolute #1 essential product.
It makes your makeup go on smoother.
Less cake on my face and more in my stomach? YAAAAHHS KWEEEEN. 👸🏽
It makes your makeup last longer. You no longer have to dread when your foundation is going to crack and fade. Unless you buy a shitty foundation, BUT I DIGRESS. 💁🏽
It can brighten your skin. I have two No7 primers, one is their basic airbrushed formula, while the other is their radiance formula. Radiance has a purple undergone to doght natural shadows and darkness on your skin. Great for blotchy or patchy skin, or for the gal who just wants a bit more luminescence for the day. Worth the buy? Abso-freakin-lutely. 🙆🏽
It can moisturise your skin. There are 2-in-one primers that work as a moisturiser and primer. Though I do recommend that you always use a moisturiser, regardless of how moisture intense a primer may say it is. Don’t skip moisturising. That’s like showering without washing your nether regions. Ew. UGH why. Just moisturise, woman. Don’t argue with me! 🙅🏽
So in other words, if you want to make sure your makeup stays flawless longer with minimal effort, just use the right primer for your skin type before you apply foundation. Here are my top 5 favourites: 🙋🏽
- No7 Airbrush Away radiance boosting primer
- Benefit Pore-fessional primer
- Mac Prep-and-Prime Fix
- Olay firm and lift – hydration and primer
- Urban Decay Eyeshadow Potion Primer
Here’s also a good picture that explains how to put on primer:
I hope this helps you on your way to creating your own perfect face. Don’t forget to end with a setting spray!
